The aim of professional nursing is to assist clients to improve, correct or adjurst to physical, emotional, psychosocial, spiritual and environmental conditions ofr which they seek help, as well as to prevent illness and promote health. Accomplishment of this aim is through appliation of knowledge gained from many disciplines. These disciplines include but are not limited to the basic sciences, nursing science, biomedicine, philosophy and ethics, as well as, physical, economic, behavioral, cultural and social sciences.

Continuing education is a must for maintaining and striving for high nursing standards. The nursing association is responsible for promoting and providing as well as reviewing and approving activities to advance the knowledge of the professional nurse. Through life-long learning, personal and professional accountability, nurses pursue practices that support the highest level of health and quality of life for clients who are wll, acutely ill, or experiencing chronic or disabling illness. Nurses formulate care for the individual, family and community congruent with the realities and values experienced by diverse cultures and populations.

The New Mexico Nurses Association recognizes quality health care requires a multidisciplinary, collaborative approach that requires the utmost knowledge and skill to meet the demands of an ever-changing, evolving healthcare field.

It is imperative for the association to foster the highest professional standards in nursing through support of nursing education, nursing practice and nursing research. It is also critical for the association to promote the public's governing bodies and other practice disciplines recognition of nursing's contributions.
